KPIs should explain risk, not only activity
A useful technical dashboard does more than count completed jobs. It shows whether machinery reliability, maintenance discipline and inspection readiness are improving or deteriorating. Owners should be able to see the connection between defects, downtime, spend and asset condition.
Core technical management indicators
- Planned maintenance completion and overdue critical jobs
- Open defects by severity, age and operational impact
- Unplanned downtime and repeat equipment failures
- Class, statutory and vetting observations to closure
- Dry-dock budget, scope growth and schedule variance
- Fuel and lubricant consumption against operating profile
How to use the data
KPIs need thresholds, accountable owners and a defined review cadence. A red indicator without an agreed corrective action is only decoration. The best dashboards link each exception to evidence, a target date and a responsible person.
Trend lines are usually more valuable than isolated monthly values because they reveal whether risk is being controlled before it affects charter performance or asset value.
